Troy, Just wanted to take a minute and thank you for a great pup. Dex is definately turning out to be everything we wanted and more. Although we got him at a bit older age than one might normallly he took to us, our home and our other younger lab without any issues. He loves people, other dogs, birds and training He has a great termperment and on/off switch which is great being he'll be in the house more than in the kennel. And I know you know, this guy can POINT! He's got a bright future in the field for sure and i'll give him all the opportunity I can. I think he will make us all proud at the May APLA test in WI, many more HT's and in the field in the future. Thanks again for a great pup and keep up the great work there at Northstar!
Dex has now earned his 4 X GMPR title with the APLA with more to come !
Dex is also has his HRCH title with the HRC Shaun and Shannon Greene

Deets has been a wonderful and very owner friendly dog. He is a very trainable dog in the field and in a house setting. He has been a very bird-loving (or hating, however you want to look at it) dog since I first got him at 8 weeks old. He has been a natural since the beginning. I wish I could attribute more of how well he has done to his training, but that’s not the case since he retrieved his first duck at 12 weeks and pointed his first rooster during season at 17 weeks old. He has also done very well around the house. He has not chewed anything up besides his bones. I could not be happier with the quality of dog that he started out to be and has continued to be. He is a great companion and hunter.
Deets Earned his GMPR title fall 2014!

Troy, Not the best picture, but no doubt there will be more to come.My dog TOK is quickly becoming an outstanding hunter. Only 18 months old, she learns more every time we get another bird. She is pointing more each time we are out.Shot about a dozen birds over her so far this year.If I wasn’t so darn busy with work, it could be more. She is everything I hoped for in a pointing lab. Would like to stop by some day when all settles fown. You would enjoy seeing her.

Hi Troy, I just wanted to tell you how happy I am with how Hazel is performing this season. She has had some great days in the field this fall. As I finally had to retire our older lab, this is the first season on her own. She has great bird drive-it seems the "switch" has really turned on for her and she is a rooster machine! I like how she can be easily handled by my son and how she never gives up. On the flip side, she is turning out to be a great family dog as well. Thanks for a great dog! Rhett Bradley

Mays is now 13 months old and has completed force fetch, is running marks well, pointing birds and covering a ton of ground. She has the most prey drive of all my dogs (and that’s saying something), she is very intelligent and is the most bitable dog I have ever worked with. I am very excited to run her for her CP title this fall and to hunt over her this fall. I anticipate a lot of good days hunting behind her in the future. Thanks for the wonderful breeding and the great dog.
Mays Earned CPR title Fall 2010 Mays also earned her APR title with the APLA spring 2011 titled by Northstar. EARNED HER 1.5XGMPR & SH spring 2012 trained and handled by Northstar! Mays Owned by Justin and Breanne VanDeHey SD

I was looking for a relatively small, (45-60 lb) lightly colored, pointing yellow lab and Jersey fit the bill perfectly. She was relatively easy to housebreak and she picked up basic commands quickly. Plus, she has been fantastic in the house. I had her out on live pigeons at about 3 months and she pointed the first time out. From there we continued our pigeon work with a starter pistol and Jersey held points after hearing the shot. I had Jersey out hunting several times for both pheasants and ruffed grouse. During one of her first hunting trips we shot a bird down in some CRP and 2 other experienced hunting dogs were searching for it. After nearly giving up the search we saw Jersey with the bird pinned down. Jersey only continued to get better during the pheasant hunting season as she started to range out and hunt through heavy cover. She did a pretty good job at marking downed birds and she continues to point. I am extremely pleased with Jersey and look forward to see her continuing progress.

Troy,
I would like to thank you for the dog (Jet). He is everything you said he would be right off the get go. At eight months old he has only exceeded my expectations with over 20 grouse being shot over him,15 pheasants, and a few ducks and geese. He not only excels in the upland with beautiful points and retrieves to hand. His versatility amazes me with duck hunting in the morning and upland in the afternoon. One of his best assets is that when at home he already knows how to turn the switch off from hunting to relax. After seeing what type of product NORTHSTAR produces. I would highly recommend Troy, weather it be for training or just the purchase of a crazy bird hunting nut. The sky is the limit for this NORTHSTAR product.
Thanks, Darin

I picked up Harley from Troy over two years ago already. Man time flies when you are having fun! Harley has one of those personalities that are just plain fun to be around! He has great looks, temperament, and loves to work! He can go from a laid back house/family dog that seems best suited to relaxing and taking naps to an all out hunting/retrieving machine in a snap of a finger. Troy did the early bird and retrieving work with Harley and got him off to a great start. After Troy got Harley started I began to train with a local kennel in my area. The group I train with does more field trial type training but Harley managed to handle those crazy long marks with ease. I think that is a testament to a well thought out breeding, some good training, all resulting in a great dog! Thanks Troy!

Troy, Jack (Tigs Irish Cream x kenai Midnight Sun) has been an excellent hunting companion and family dog! He is now in his second real hunting season and consistently holding strong points on all pheasants. He also did a good job in the duck blind with multiple long water retrieves this year. He is so eager to hunt and in SD last year, an experienced guide commented on Jack's drive and never quitting. He is a very good all around dog, gets along great with all other dogs, and is a great family member. Thank you!

Reese has all the potential in the world and I am exciting to see how she translates from her training to hunting wild birds. She had a very good nose and has an intense and stylish point. She is also has excellent retrieving drive and marking abilities. I can't wait to see how she matures this season into a true gun dog.

Troy,
Our drive out from Michigan was worth it to pick up Git-R from your kennels. He's turned out to be a bird-crazed hunter and has a ton of drive. At the same time, he'll relax and lay at your feet all day long (until you say "Bird!"....he'll go crazy). This is our first experience with a lab and won't be our last. We're very happy with his temperament and intelligence and look forward to continuing his training and have more goals for his abilities....hopefully work on blood trailing in the future too.
He has adjusted well to our old shorthair, cat, and kids indoors. The pigeons, quail, and chickens have to be kept outdoors however. His training has paid off as he's been retrieving since the early youth waterfowl hunt and hopefully get some more time for the late winter goose hunt soon. We do preserve hunts regularly with him and my old shorthair now and hope to take him to some Florida quail hunts this winter too.
Keep up the good work and we will be looking for future breedings soon (maybe something out of his littermate, Hoosier?). I know you would like me to get him APLA certified, but I'm happy with just a great hunting companion and family dog.
Thank you,
Trieu & Wendy Pham

Lena has been an awesome dog! She acclimated well with my two other labs and has a wonderful personality. We started on live pigeons in August, followed by honkers, sharptails, ducks, more honkers, pheasants, and more ducks. As the video shows, her retrieving skills are damn good for a 9-month old puppy. She has already made well over 100 retrieves on wild birds.
Thank you !

Rosie has turned into a really nice dog. At seven months, she passed her CPR test through APLA. She's not just an excellent pointing dog, but she has great drive in the water. She is making marked retrieves at 100+ yards. She has proven worthy of her breeding, and we can't wait for her to get old enough in a few years to breed her and pass on the wonderful genetics. She's a great family dog, as well as a hunting dog. We think she's a great addition to Spring Creek Kennels.

Troy, Thank you for choosing my boy Bones for me. He is all I expected and then some. I think matching up Roscoe with Bailey was a great breeding and I would recomend one of their pups to anyone. Not only is Bones a upland and retrieving machine, he is very easilly trained and cooperative. He may well be the easiest dog I have trained to date, and that makes training a whole lot of fun. And thats what Bones is, alot of fun. This dog was force fetched literally in a matter of days. Highly intelligent and a thinker, this dog has a permanent home in my kennel and house as he is very well mannered. Thanks again and I hope you repeat this breeding, as I think these pups will be what us trainers and breeders hope for in a great dog. Thanks again, Jon Cart
Bones EARNED his CPR title with the APLA Spring 2012! Congrats Jon & Holly

I brought Maggie home in May of 2008 and she immediately exceeded my expectations. She was easy to train and instantly became an important member of my family. She is great around my 2 sons. She loves to play but when it is time to work she puts her whole heart into it. Maggie caught on quickly to duck hunting and by our third time out she was scanning the skies and retrieving on land and in water. When pheasant hunting season rolled around she really stood out! It didn’t take her long to show me her point. By the end of the season she was holding that point for minutes and waiting for me to flush the birds. She also showed great prey drive retrieving numerous wounded roosters. The best part about Maggie is that she achieved all of this in her first season of hunting. I can’t start to say how happy I am with her and I can’t wait to see what she can do in the next 10 years.

Rosco x Sway
Troy,
I want say how pleased I am with the Rosco/Sway litter that I purchased from you in 2011. He has proved to be all and more then I could have wished for. I was looking for a pup from a litter with a deep hunting desire, one that had a great nose for upland birds and a desire to retrieve. Chopper has proved to have inherited both of these qualities from his parents. Not not only does he have the desire but also has the calm easy going temperament making a great house dog also. This past season, hunting in SD he really came in to his own, not only pointing birds but marking and retrieving dead and cripples. His nose seems to be 2nd to none. He is exactly what I wanted-----next year hope to get some good pics when we are in SD again. I would and have recommended you to a number of guys looking a pointing lab.
Thanks

When I made the decision to add another dog to the family I knew I wanted a cross between McNally's Right Stuff Ridley and a female with drive on the upland side. I was very fortunate to watch Ridley grow up and witness the natural ability he has. When it came time to find the right female it was suggested that Northstar's Feelin Tipsy "Sway" would be the ideal female. She was smaller to the ground and a pointing machine. The combination would be one for the ages. This pairing turned out just as expected. The work Troy does with the puppies is just amazing.
Murphy is very trainable and loves to please. As you can see from the pictures not only is Murphy a great friend to take out in the field he is even better friend to come home too.
Thanks,
Matt

I took Abbie when she was 7 weeks old. Right from the get go she was one of the best pups I’d seen. On the second day of having her home she went out in the yard and held point on a Robin in my yard. As she has gotten older that point has only become stronger. She is a great all around dog that loves the water and thrives in the field. With living in the house we appreciate her calm, laid back manor. When you get her into the field or a training situation she comes alive and can’t wait to work for you. Training her was a piece of cake. She was able to be fully whistle trained by 3 months old and now at about a year and a half she is trained on hand signals as well. She is one of the most intelligent dogs I have worked with. There is nothing she can’t do. I would recommend North Star to anyone. I know that I will plan to get my next dog from them as well. Troy,
Here is an update on Cooper. He is becoming a fantastic hunting dog with endless drive and a very strong point. He is crazy about retrieving and absolutely loves the water and has a real knack for marking. He has pointed and retrieved several roosters for me already this year. A few of his points have been so hard that I have had to walk in and kick the bird up. He quarters the field like a pro and seems to never tire. Thanks again for an awesome dog!

Echo is a dog that we had a chance to work with out of our first litter with Jetta. She was a true joy to have around before she was sold as a started dog. While we had her here she displayed great natural ability in the upland field and in marked retrieves. She was also a wonderful dog to have around the house. We are proud to have produced such a nice hunting dog.

STARTED DOG
Hi Troy, Another great day for Shadow. She pointed 12 pheasants and pointed one for probably 5 minutes. My son thought it was old scent and tried to call her off it. We have about a foot of snow and the birds dig deep under the brush to hide. Shadow would not leave her point until my son jumped on the brush until the bird came out. Her nose appeared a little less sensitive when we started hunting in October than my brittanies' but I discovered that was only her inexperience. She now picks up scent 20' away! She is truly amazing. She has not grown any and that's fine by us. A 38 lb. lab is my favorite kind. I hope you are doing well. Also my friend wants a carbon copy of Shadow if ever available. Joe

STARTED DOG
Hey Troy, Just thought that I would send you out an email to say how happy my parents are with Cally. I had her hunting down in NW Iowa. She did great! Still a bit of puppy in her, but she improved every day! Shot 49 birds over her that week as a group, with other dogs as well of course. She is a great dog, and is a real sweetheart. Had a couple of nice points and really seemed to be figuring it out by the end of the week. She quartered well, maybe even beyond her means with a group of seven on opener, and by the end of the week came off of hen's quickly and never ran off and flushed birds wild. I included a couple of pictures from opening day when we limited out, where she had a couple of great retrieves even though hunting with some much more experienced dogs. I have to admit I was a little concerned hunting her with a large group at a young age, but she hunted at a maturity much beyond her 11 months. I have not had her out in the duck blind yet, but she has improved her water entry and loves to swim, so I am excited to get her out there! As a house dog my mom has been very happy. They have a fenced backyard, which apparently she has really been enjoying. Don't know if you appreciate these emails or not, but I just want you to know that she has a very good home. My mother is home most of the day and Cally gets to spend most of it next to her. I just wanted to thank you for such a great family dog that has an amazing drive in the field!
Sincerely, Joe Benson MN

Troy, just a quick note about Cash – we are blessed to have him part of our family. Cash is simply a wonderful dog and exactly what my wife and I were looking for. In the house he a member of the family, gentle and gives and receive love. In the field he’s a different dog. Passionate, driven and hunter’s dog. He’s a hunting, pointing and retrieving machine.
Nancy and I looked for a dog of this character for over six months, until we found Cash. Troy, you did a wonderful job training him and refining his natural ability to hunt. Also really appreciate your candor. Cash fit the bill, but you also warned us he’s a bit head strong. Yes, he certainly can be, but that is part of his driven, self-confidence and charm.
Again thanks for all you did. If you ever have a client that is need of references, feel free to have them give me a call.
My best, Cam Cloeter

Jetta Started Dog former breeding female of Northstar.
I don’t know where to start to describe what a great dog Jetta is and how pleased we are with what Troy provided us. Jetta is every bit of what Troy said she was, and much more. It can be difficult deciding to buy a 6 year old dog, but bringing Jetta into our home and into our hunting lifestyle has been more than a pleasure. Jetta is one of the most obedient, well mannered dogs we’ve ever had the opportunity to work with. We are constantly amazed at what she is able to do, both in the field and at home as a family pet. She has an incredible desire to work in the field, with high energy and consistency that continues to amaze us, but she also has a light switch attitude when she comes home- curling up on the couch and just being a great bud.
Jetta has a strong desire to continue to learn and prove herself, not that she has anything to prove. She’s that 6-yr old that thinks she’s 2 and continues to surprise us with her performance. Troy was such a pleasure to deal with. With just a phone call and my word that I would make the drive from Missouri to Minnesota, Troy stood behind everything he said. Since Jetta’s placement in our home, she has now become a consistent player in UFTA field trials. This was a new game for Jetta, but she had no problem picking up the game. Who would have thought that a pointing lab would earn her spot in the top performers, along with all of the other many breeds of pointing dogs! Jetta has been a top performer in the UFTA organization, but she has also been a tremendous asset to our guiding services. This is one of the many tributes to what a phenomenal dog Jetta is. She can go from being a medium range field trial dog to a close range guide dog with just the flip of a switch. If we were to ever need to replace Jetta, there would be no doubt in our minds that we would look to Troy for another fine dog. We cannot say enough nice things about our experience with North Star Pointing Labs and Troy Benson.
Sincerely, Dan Piel

Meg Started Dog APR titled by Northstar
Troy, We purchased Meg from Troy two years ago and i can tell you it has been the best experience in my life. Meg is an awesome hunting dog and even a better companion, we now live in her house she took it over. My son had a bad experience with another breeder/trainer and Troy stepped up and went over and above what any other person would do to try to correct a issue that the original trainer would not. Troy is committed to being a trainer, breeder and just a very exceptional person. Thank you Troy for being the person you are.
